All hail!

Do you know what was lovely? The Queen of Teen ceremony is what’s lovely. I had such a great day. I am so blessed to have spent the day talking to amazing book-addicted young readers – anyone who says young people aren’t reading enough is crayfish. It was also a great pleasure to hang out with the other nominated queens – a more lovely bunch of guys you couldn’t hope to meet.

The day started with a lovely luncheon with the authors and our superfans before we were whisked away in PINK LIMOS! Riding in a Playboy themed limo with Maureen Johnson and SC Ransom will forever feature in my more surreal memory collection. We were taken to Queen of Teen HQ – a beautiful country home with a marquee on the lawn. It was super fancy.

After some mingling with fans and signing MANY Hollow Pikes, it was time for speeches (mine went a bit Lady Gaga, but that’s fine) and the announcement. By now, you’ll know that my American sister-to-another-mister Maureen Johnson took the title – and deservedly so. If you haven’t read The Name of the Star or Devilish, do so now please. YES YOU. Full snaps to Maureen for resurrecting her 90s prom dress too even though it involved the possible threat of public nudity. What a hero.

Ms Johnson has two years on the throne, but you better believe I’ll be back in 2014 with an army of Hollowers…

Many thanks to everyone who voted both at shortlisting and in the final – you know who you are, and you know that voting made you sexier and more beautiful. Thanks, as ever, to my agent, editor and Nina Douglas for attending on the day and a BIG thanks to The Book People for organising the event and Guildford Waterstones for arranging the glorious afterparty.

Hollowers Update

Hey hey hey! I just realised that I hadn’t blogged in a while, so I thought I’d do a nice bulletin style update as to what is going on with me. I’ve been so busy – two school tours, bookshop signings, secret projects up ahead. This is pretty much living the writing dream – I’ve been full-time for nearly a year now (time flies etc) and I’ve had such a great year.

1. Book 2: I’ve had my head down writing. That’s pretty much all the gossip. I’m happy to report though, that although there’s all the edits and stuff to come, book 2 is done and off with my editor. All writers out there will know that this is a tense time. We’ve talked at length about what happens in the new book, so there shouldn’t be any surprises, but you still hope that they’ll *love* what you come up with.

If you’re a new writer, believe me when I say it doesn’t get any easier! Getting your first book published is a fantastic head party, but it’s only the start – not the end!

Book 2 won’t be in shops for AGES, so I don’t want to give away too much information just yet. On the school tour I did give away some snippetinas…for instance. YES, it is another YA. YES, it’s a thriller. YES, it’s a standalone. NO, there is no supernatural element.

2. Hollow Pike! Can you believe that Hollow Pike has been out for six months! It’s insane! In September you’ll hear more about Hollow Pike when the SEXY PURPLE EDGED paperback comes out. I know that some bloggers have already had copies in the post, and I’m jealous! Nearer the time there will be some new content made available – deleted scenes, a prequel short story (I hope) and some other fun stuff too. If any bloggers fancy hosting, get in touch with me or Nina!

3. You guys! The response to Hollow Pike continues to be ludicrously positive. I AM SO GRATEFUL. I’ve said this before, but I really couldn’t face the prospect of reviews, so the fact that readers have been so kind and generous is overwhelming. I dipped into Goodreads for the first time in ages and was stunned to read that 1000 readers had added it and 80% of the ratings were 4 or 5 stars! I did a tiny side-eye tear!

You all do such a great job of spreading the word too – this quirky little book about the freaky kids is travelling fast! Thank you x

4. Queen of Teen – I’m still buzzing from the nomination and the ceremony has come around so fast. This Friday I’ll don my pink finery to attend the award show. As soon as I can I’ll be uploading all the photos to share with y’all. I totes won’t win, but this is my first award show, so I’m dead dead excited!

5. Pop-Ra: This website will NO LONGER contain any of my music writing. Don’t worry, I haven’t fallen out of love with pop music – I’ve moved everything to a seperate place: POP-RA! That is the home of all my favourite new and old music and music columns. There is also a new Twitter @PopRaMusic. Please do follow!

That’s quite enough about me – how the devil are YOU? What’s the gossip? Seriously! I haven’t left the computer since March!
