Every year I like to do a top ten. I don’t know if anyone cares, but I really do. Music is such a big part of my work and a big part of my life. I find authors who opt out of pop culture a bit of an anomaly, especially YA ones. Are we saying that things young adults like aren’t relevant?

I still love pop music, although it’s been a tough year. The best selling song of the year will be Robin Thicke’s rape anthem Blurred Lines. That’s sad. That says to me that some people aren’t even processing the words they listen to.

This said, if you looked hard enough there were some pop gems over the last 12 months. Here are MY ten favourites. You’ll note that fucking Daft Punk song is nowhere to be found.

10. Haim – Don’t Save Me

Sunny, Hynes produced gem from the reigning Queens of Blogger Pop.

9. Charli XCX – Superlove

If this had a better chorus it’d be way up the list. Has a great K-Pop feel to it.

8. Annie – Back Together

Amazing Chart Show themed video with a bit of The Show by Girls Aloud. It’s great to have Annie back.

7. Katy B – 5 am

Katy B is secretly amazing. Her last album was fantastic and the new one is shaping up to be great too. What I like about this is that it both does and doesn’t sound like a Katy B song.

6. Tinie Tempah – Trampoline

You either love or hate Diplo and this is no different – it’s either genius or a racket. The video is slightly problematic, but one hopes Tempah knows what he’s doing.

5. Neon Jungle – Trouble

Hugely reminiscent of early Spice Girls, it’s nice to see a pop act who haven’t come from The X Factor. See also The Vamps.

4. Paramore – Still Into You

This song quietly lingered in the top 40 for most of 2013. Because it’s good. Also how hot is the beardy one?

3. Lady Gaga – Applause

Always lovely when a song gets better with time and repeated listens. Applause is nuts (and I don’t especially understand why I should care about Gaga’s relationship with her fans) but remains fresh several months on.

2. Marina and the Diamonds – EVOL

Sort of cheating. This was a free download for Valentine’s Day. It’s a tour-de-force electro stomper. I so hope a third album is on the cards.

1. Mutya|Keisha|Siobhan – Flatline

OK. So this was all a bit of a managerial car wreck. There was excitement, then nothing for ages, then a song appeared on Soundcloud and then NINE YEARS LATER it was available to buy on iTunes following a horrid video. Put all that to one side, this is a perfect summer pop song that showcases the spellbinding voices. There’s just something magic when these three get together. Fingers crossed the album sees the light of day.

What a lovely bunch of songs. All of these and more of 2013’s best pop has been lovingly curated onto THIS SPOTIFY PLAYLIST for you to enjoy at your holiday parties.

Let me also take this chance to wish all my readers a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR. It’s been such a fantastic year- thank you to all the readers and bloggers who supported CRUEL SUMMER and BEING A BOY. You continued support means the world. Can’t wait to do it all over again in 2014 for Bloody Mary chills with SAY HER NAME (pre order now, kidz) and THIS BOOK IS GAY.
